PLAYING OUTFIELD
“Run it down and lay out!”

THE OUTFIELDER: A good outfielder is fast, athletic, and fearless. He must be ready on each pitch and adjust to each batter’s tendencies. An outfielder must be able to judge fly balls, charge groundballs, and have an accurate arm. An outfield error will almost always lead to an extra base. Generally, the centerfielder is the fastest and has the best judgment. The right fielder usually has the strongest arm. All three outfielders are important and they must “talk” to each other on every play!

BASIC SKILLS:

1. The ability to track or judge the ball. This is the number one skill and the most difficult. Outfielders must “open” to the ball and run to a point where it will come down. DO NOT spin! At times, he must turn his back to the ball and run it down. On grounders, be sure to get the body down in front of the ball.
2. The ability to throw accurately and powerfully. The grip should be across the seams (thumb underneath) – 4 seams. The overhand grip/throw will put a good “skip” on the ball and is easiest to catch.
3. Good running technique. Run to the ball with arms pumping and do not put the glove up until the last three (3) steps or so. Sprint to the ball on every play! Do not drift to it.
4. Catching the ball: Use two hands. It is safer and quicker to get rid of the ball (.5 seconds). Catch EVERY ball above the eyes. Communicate with other outfielders and call it, “I’ve got it!” (LOUDLY.)
5. ALWAYS hit the cutoff man. Throw the ball hard to his head or chest. It must go through him and make it easy for him to cut it if necessary. Never throw higher than the cutoff man. Failure to hit the cutoff man can cost you the game.
